Kanaka

Tanjore painting is a classical South Indian painting style dating back to about 1600 AD, when the native Nayakas and the Maratha King Sarfoji of Thanjavur encouraged this craft among a host of other art forms.

It is characterised by rich & vivid colours, glittering gold foil overlaid on gesso work, & inlay of precious/semi-precious stones. The subject is mostly Hindu gods and goddesses & episodes from Hindu Puranas.
